The final result!

Sorry for the quality, was taken on my phone, but here is the final result for my first 3D print!
Need to work on my painting skills a bit more, but it was fun to do regardless

My sister likes it too as her present, which is the main thing :)

Painting the model

So I managed to get some paint from a shop that specializes in selling models. This is oil based and works extremely well on painting on a 3D model.

I also used a primer from hobby craft for the first initial base. This managed to get rid of any unwanted cracks on the actual print, making it easier for me to model.

After a few hours, and leaving more hours in between to let each coat dry... things got a bit messy...

But the result was worth it! And was making great process!

Success!

The model has been printed!

It has taken a few attempts for both parts sadly (base and actual character), where it would not print properly either way. The character's legs malfunctioned and the base ended up being a bit wonky, but thankfully it all worked out well on the second attempt for each. Also the dedication from the man who runs the store also helped with the efficiency of the print, saving me less worry!

Really happy with how it turned out. Size wise and quality. I chose white as the colour so it would be easier to paint, and was given advice on how to polish it nicely, using some acrylics and decent finishing spray, so it is not over yet!

I will be uploading more pictures tomorrow once it is unpacked and hopefully in one piece after the train journey back home, but until then, here is one that was taken in the actual shop.

I was a little worried it would not stand or fit on the base as well, but it seems to be doing a great job so far!

While I fix the model...

In the mean time, I thought I'd write a section on where I am getting my model 3D printed.

There is (luckily!) a 3D printing shop just down the road from where I work, and they have cleverly printed itinerary on display. So far they have been extremely helpful with advice and feedback, and are dedicated to customer satisfaction.

Website can be found here: http://www.the3dprinthouse.com/

Some examples of their work that they have printed are shown below.

I would recommend this place for anyone interested in 3D printing!

Makar Render in Marmoset 2

I thought I'd take another render of the model in marmoset, to see how it would look under the right shadows and lighting.

Another Render

Here is another render that shows off the mask a little bit better. You are able to see the actual details clearer now.

Posing and Sending

The model has been posed and is almost ready to be sent off to be printed!

I would have liked to have him actually playing his instrument, but seeing as it would not be able to stand, I decided to pose it so it could have four 'legs' like shown.

One last thing left to do before sending is to make sure it is all one mesh, which will be done in Zbrush. This will be done to ensure that the 3D printer won't cut into any unwanted mesh that may not be visible.

Until then, here is a render so far!

Unfortunately shadows are not catching that well with the mask, so this may have to be emphasized a little, but I shall wait for feedback from 3D printing company till then.
